About the author

Justin Omps is an American who spent years reconstructing where the Few actually drank. He came to the subject as an outsider, which meant asking the obvious questions, what became of the pubs at the airfield gates, and who still remembers them. The answers, gathered from archives, breweries, local historians, and the pubs themselves, and recorded in the gazetteer of Pubs, Pilots, and the Battle of Britain, are by turns heartening and heartbreaking. Some still trade. Some are Thai restaurants and convenience stores. One was demolished in 2019 with its famous sign still out front.

His Anglophilia began with cars. Many a bloody knuckle was earned on the rusty undersides of a MGBs, Minis and Series Land Rovers, and whatever affection began in a garage grew, over the years, into a fascination with the summer of 1940, when the RAF, with characteristic British bloody-mindedness, held the line alongside the Polish, Czech, Belgian, and American pilots who fill this book's pubs. He lives in Arlington, Virginia. This is his first book.
